• An arrhythmia is:
• Any abnormal rhythm of the heart
• Abnormality of the electrical conduction system of the heart
• There are several types of heart arrhythmias, some can be more dangerous than others
• The most common cardiac arrhythmia is atrial fibrillation
• 1 in 4 Americans will get atrial fibrillation in their lifetime
• Atrial fibrillation can cause stroke, which can be reduced with the use of blood thinners
• There are new procedures available to detect and treat cardiac arrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation
• Implantable loop recorders can detect arrhythmias
• Small implanted devices under the skin to detect abnormal heart rhythms
• Detecting atrial fibrillation in unknown caused stroke may be able to prevent future strokes
• Tying off the left atrial appendage (ligation)
• May help in reducing stroke risk in those who cannot take blood thinners
• A special type of premature beat, called a premature ventricular contraction was previously thought to be benign, however it can cause
• Symptoms
• Heart failure
• Ablation (a procedure to burn the source of the arrhythmia) can be considered for such conditions as atrial fibrillation and premature ventricular contractions and other heart arrhythmia |
